Editorial standards & trust

How every edition of The Cold Standard is sourced, verified and checked before it goes out — and where software, including language models, is used in producing it.

The verification standard

Every story in this edition was confirmed by at least two independent publishers before publication — or it did not run. Market-research syndicators and press-release wires never count as confirmation.

Production

How a story gets into an edition

Each edition runs the same pipeline, in order. If a story cannot clear step four it does not run — an edition of two confirmed stories is preferred to ten loose ones.

  1. 01

    Collect

Cold-economy trade press, industry bodies and regulators, plus open news feeds. Items older than 14 days are dropped, along with duplicates, off-topic items and known spam and market-report mills.

  2. 02

    Draft

A draft is compiled from the collected items, with each item's publisher and link carried through.

  3. 03

    Second pass

A separate verification pass re-checks the draft against those source items before anything else happens.

  4. 04

    Live cross-reference

The pipeline searches for independent coverage of each story. A story needs at least two distinct, fresh publishers — none of them the original outlet — or it is dropped and the edition is redrafted from what survived.

  5. 05

    Authoritative primaries

Regulators and standards bodies count as primary sources in their own right and do not need a second publisher.

Market-research syndicators and press-release wires never count as confirmation. Each story prints the publishers that confirmed it, and every edition links and credits its sources.

Safety gate

What runs before anything sends

A compliance linter runs against every email before it sends, and it fails closed: an unresolved placeholder, a missing unsubscribe path, a missing postal address, or zero source links means nothing goes out.

Sensitive terms — fraud, criminal, lawsuit, died and similar — are flagged and printed so a person reviews them before they ever reach an inbox. A human reviews the day’s edition before it is sent.

Corrections

When we get something wrong

We never silently edit or delete a published edition. A verified error is fixed in the web archive and a dated correction note is appended to the affected edition. The corrections log is never pruned, and an empty log is shown as empty — the absence of corrections only means something if we would publish them. A story that fails verification after publication is retracted with a stated reason, not quietly removed.

What qualifies, how to submit, and the full log: the corrections policy.

Disclosure

Where AI assistance is used — and its limits

The brief is assembled and summarised with software that uses language models. They are used to draft the edition from the source material and to run the separate second-pass check described above.

The audio briefing is also machine-made: its script is written by a model from the same source material and read by our own house text-to-speech voice. It is not a human narrator and it is not original reporting — it is a reading of the same verified brief.

The model is not permitted to add a fact, a figure, a source or a line that is not in the source material. The narration rules scope interest to what the material actually answers and forbid invented lines and invented sources; a draft that fails them is rewritten, repaired or dropped.

What the model does not decide is whether a story is true. That is judged against real, published, independent sources — never against the model’s own output — and nothing it produces bypasses the safety gate or the human review above.

Sponsorship

No sponsor content in the edition

Today the edition carries no sponsor content. There are no ad networks, no programmatic ads, no sponsored stories and no data resale, and no sponsor slots have been sold.

If a sponsor slot does run, it is a single clearly-labeled block, set apart from the editorial — never inside a story and never disguised as news. Sponsors never see an edition before readers do and never influence coverage.

See the sponsorship page for how that works.
